The Department for Communication and Anti-repression has two main focuses. On the one hand, the large area of data protection and, on the other hand, the broad field of Anti-repression.
Anti-repression begins with direct assistance to victims who are harassed by organs of repression. This is based on the observation that, at the latest with the events of recent years, political work and critical initiative at the FU Berlin has increasingly become anti-repression work. The department counters the increasing repression with better communication and networking as a basis and condition for solidary practice.
But also the theoretical background of repression and the creeping reprisals of the university (exmatriculation threats, attendance lists...) are topics we deal with. We see the identification and critical monitoring of the structural foundations for repressive processes at universities as an important task.
We want:
- strengthen the capacity of individuals at the university to act by being aware of the effects of repression
- undermining authorities and reducing fears so that repression can no longer work through its threat
- use repression to convey political content, e.g. debates about a university without police, attendance lists, security services and cameras
Not one person is affected, but they mean all of us. Another university is possible! Achieve more together!
The other main focus of the departments work is the discussion of data protection issues. Freie Universität often ignores this area. Here, we see our task in spreading data protection and bringing it to the students, so that each individual is aware of his*her rights and can assert them against supposed authorities. We support action against data protection violations and also advise on data protection issues and computer problems in our office hours.
