Dear fellow students,
We would like to invite you to our day of action on student housing at Tempelhofer Feld on Friday, 10th of September!
Maybe you just moved to Berlin or maybe you have been living here for a while. Either way, housing in Berlin has become practically unaffordable for many of us. Finding a room in Berlin for the 325 Euros provided in the BAföG maximum-rate for housing costs is hardly imaginable.
Guaranteed housing is the essential for us to be able to study. However, we are far from having that. Neither are there enough dormitory places, nor does the free market offer adequate housing for everyone. Instead, rents in Berlin have risen to exorbitant heights - until the rent cap provided a temporary remedy. After the cap was recently overturned, an important instrument against horrendous rents was removed. Profit-oriented real estate companies can continue to raise rents. A nationwide, effective rent cap is not yet in sight.
Where housing is and remains affordable only for a few, it also indirectly affects the composition of our universities: Those who cannot afford to pay the rent in Berlin are sooner or later not going to be able to live and study in Berlin. We will not accept this selection by the financial situation of an individual.
That's why we want to discuss the topic on the 10th of September, from 12 to 19 o'clock at Tempelhofer Feld and discuss how the housing situation for students can be improved. There will be numerous short workshops, among others by: LandesAstenKonferenz Berlin, the university groups of Deutsche Wohnen Enteignen and the Berliner MieterGemeinschaft, as well as a housing bourse, a bicycle self-help workshop, space for exchange on rental problems or the upcoming referendum and a poster painting action for the big demo against high rents one day later.
